Finding that love again.....

In 2013, I was on a high on fitness. I had a personal trainer that motivated me so that made it easy. I competed in a bodybuilding show for figure competition and I never felt so good at 60. Having a personal trainer is very expensive so I had to let go.
I just joined a YMCA very close to my house and I have my own treadmill and other gym equipment. So clearly, I have everything I need to exercise.
I do remember how much I loved going to the gym and working out and how great I felt afterwards. I look at my pictures from 2013 and I'm disappointed in myself that I didn't maintain that; although maintaining competition weight is hard.
Today I have deleted all my weight log in and want to not look back at the past but look at the future!
How do I find that love again for exercise?

Try starting with some of the YMCA classes if you have time. Just show up whether you feel like it or not. Sometimes its hard to get the motivation going when you can easily just stop when ever you want.0

As a side note, I see lots of people your age at my YMCA all the time and they seem to be enjoying it (especially the Zumba classes).0

Make a really killer workout playlist? Songs you haven't heard for years and sound really really appealing, then vow not to listen to it except at the gym? Works for me.
Or since it worked in the past, what about scheduling just a couple sessions (because $$$) with a personal trainer? Having the appointment would get you back in the gym door, which could push you back into it.0 -
@20yearsyounger -- I used to love zumba. I will check out the classes. I'm a former runner and I would love to get back into that. I have a dirty girl run scheduled for August but I would like to do some 5Ks, 10Ks or maybe even consider doing the Army 10 miler again...that was a fun run.
@ninerbuff -- thank you for the reminder --consistency and repetition. You're so right!
@cheshirecatastrophe - Actually I did just make a brand new playlist. I do enjoy music a great deal and haven't listen to any in a long time. Which reminds me, I used to love spinning as well....maybe I'll check out those classes. Between spinning, running and weight lifting, I hope the love comes back.
Thanks all!0 -
I have documented posts in these forums as of maybe 2 months ago saying that I would rather walk than run and there was no way in hell I will be running. My friends have convinced me and now for the last 4 weeks I have been running at least 30K a week, minimum 6K each time, no couch to 5K, no nothing. I used to be a sprinter and even in high school I never did anything above 800m. I Just did a forest gump. Do what you love. Mix in the zumba to switch it up. My play list helped me with the running. If you don't mind I would love to add you as a friend. You give me hope, hopefully I can offer encouragement.0

@20yearsyounger -- thanks for the friend invite. Always good to have encouragement from each other. Good for you on running and you have done it so quickly. I do have to be careful about my love for running because I need/like lifting weights too and I have been amazed how how weight lifting shapes my body, so I really want to get into that again.0

Make yourself go. Once you get past the first week or so, you'll start to feel restless on days you don't meet a certain amount of exercise.0

Just showing up at the gym is the hardest part! I've never left the gym thinking "I wish I hadn't done that." I love the way I feel after a great workout, so try some of the classes and just make them part of your routine. I put my workouts in my calendar so I don't accidentally schedule other stuff that might interfere with them. Maybe classes like Zumba and bodypump will help you find the love again. I'm certain it won't take you long to get your exercise mojo back.0

@ZebsterBC and SunflowerCat74....thanks. Now if this darn snow would go away so I can get to the gym, that would be nice. But then again, shoveling snow is a workout in itself!!!0

If paying for a trainer really motivated you, I say do it again. Yes, it's expensive, but I just know personally I've spent the same amount of money on bullsh*t that I immediately regretted buying. Can't put a price on good health0

@krisalexine -- I do understand that but I'll be retiring in the next few years and I want to eat good dog food, vice cheap dog food lol. It's a choice I'm making. Many people success without personal trainers. I know I can do this...I just have to get motivated to get on the track and stay on it.0

Like others have said, you just have to make yourself do it. I was like you two years ago. I was in the best shape ever, running half marathons and did my first spartan race. Then unfortunately life got in the way and I really slacked on working out. I got things back on track with my life about 6 months ago and now I'm back into working out consistently and haven't felt better. I feel like my body is getting back to the way it looked before, more toned and defined muscles. Feel free to friend me. I love motivating people and having people there to motivate me. Good luck!0

I schedule my work outs like a doctors appointment. I even have an alarm on my phone that goes of and reminds me with the alarm titled "get off your butt its gym time." I will say that when I was training for my marathon I had to treat my runs like a job. That seemed to work for me. I would also suggest finding a fun class to attend and buy a cute new workout outfit. I always get excited to wear new gear (yes color me strange )0

Thanks njfitnessmom and Roxiegirl2008. That's a great idea about scheduling my exercise like a doctor appointment.0
