Weight gain, but inches lost?

Options
So I did a full weight in a measurement update after putting it off for a few weeks after I stopped exercising. I recently got an elliptical so I've been doing a lot of cardio, but no strength training lately. When I weighed in, I was 3 lbs up, which I expected, but I'd lost 2 inches on my hips and 3 on my waist! Any idea the cause? Was I building more muscle than expected on the elliptical? Some weird combination of cardio with eating too much?

Maybe your body was just holding water weight to repair muscles used during your exercise. It happens. I'm up five pounds since I started riding my bike. If I were you I'd go by clothing fit and forget the scale for awhile.

Normal daily fluctuations can be 3-5 pounds. You've just started a new exercise program, which can retain water retention. One does not build muscle in a deficit (with the exception of newbie gains). WTG on losing inches.
