I can't say that I'm very new to MFP, but I am however new to the website / community portion of it (I mostly just use the app).
I started using this to lose weight, and as a result battled with myself over what I should eat so that I could keep my calories down below the bar. This didn't work out well for me -- eating was something that I enjoyed doing. So I took a different approach.
I began using it just to log everything that I ate...no matter what it was: if I ate it, I logged it. Eventually, I knew which foods gave high calories but left me hungry afterward, and I actually lost 20 pounds eating things that I liked, just cutting out the overly "cruddy" ones.
So I must say, I am quite happy where I am, but would love to eat healthier. Now my main use of this is to monitor how healthy I eat (which hasn't been so good recently!).
