I'm curious, how does one get diagnosed with PCOS? I believe I have many of the symptoms: irregular period (since my teens), facial hair, thinning hair, depression, weight gain. I also have hypothyroidism. I once briefly discussed PCOS with my GP, and asked his thoughts -- he said you probably have it.

The way I was originally diagnosed was by going to my doctor after my always irregular periods became so irregular that I quit having them at all for four months. Talk about hurting... And the headaches. Ugh. But after doing a few tests including blood work, my general practicioner diagnosed me with the disorder (and my hypothyroidism as well). She then sent me to have an ultrasound of my ovaries to see if I indeed had cysts on them, which I did, and from there my treatment began and has continued ever since. Metformin initially kickstarted my weight loss and helped many of the unwanted side effects of PCOS alongside a combination hormone, and fish oil and niacin were also suggested for my cholesterol/triglyceride levels along with B12 and D3 to go along with everything else, although here lately the weight seems to have come back on somehow or another...

Anyway a little side tracked there. Haha. Sorry. =] But basically, if you feel you have it, have your doctor check your lab results and discuss both those and your symptoms with him/her. As everyone else has mentioned, there's so many different types of medication and treatment methods to help elevate the symptoms and irritations PCOS can bring with it.

I was referred to a fertility specialist by my MD. He dx'd me by doing an ultra sound that showed all the cysts on my ovaries (you could literally count dozens on the screen!), combined with all my symptoms - excessive body hair, irregular cycles, infertility, had cysts burst twice in my teens, weight gain, difficulty losing weight, high estrogen & testosterone levels, low progesterone levels...

I too have PCOS and it's been frustrating yo-yo'ing between 150 lbs -- 170 lbs -- 190 lbs -- and my highest 237 lbs!! I started MFP the beginning of February and have lost 8 lbs. It is possible to lose weight, but I have to be very careful about what I eat.

Do you guys notice dark patches of skin as one of your side effects? I have a dark patch behind my neck and below the breast areas. I am happy to report that these patches have improved as I have watched what I am eating.

I hope to regulate my periods (I have so far gotten 2 cycles within 2-3 months, yay!), lose 50 lbs (to start, I really wanna lose 80 lbs) and hopefully conceive in the future. =)
