Best way to stretch a muscle

A muscle on my inner, left thigh is so tight it hurts! I've tried stretching every way I can imagine; sitting on the floor with knees bent and feet together and pushing down on my legs (does that make sense??), squat position and pushing my thighs/knees out with my elbow, etc. It feels so good on my muscles on my right thigh, but oh does it hurt the left one. I'm seriously afraid one day it will just snap. Has anyone else had this problem and figured a good way to work it out? I've had this problem before but it usually works itself out but it's been like this for a few weeks. It doesn't hurt while walking or everyday life, just while working out or running.
