Leg muscle burn during exercise

ok,
Just wondering how or why this is the case:
At the gym today I did 20 minutes running on the treadmill during which my leg muscles burned intensely. However, when I then swapped over to the elliptical for a similar duration and at a higher intensity than usual, those same muscles weren't burning.
I really struggle with running, yet have been advised it will burn more calories than the elliptical machine.
Why does it burn so much??
I'm on my feet for work all day, with a lot of standing in a similar position all day but this probably isn't that relevant.
Thanks in advance guys...

How long have you been running? The elliptical takes pressure off and so you don't have that same motion from feet hitting the ground.
the thing that burns the most calories is the thing you continue to do. don't think you have to run on a treadmill or the street if you prefer the elliptical!
Running is a challenge for me also, so I prefer to do intervals if on the treadmill so that I can work myself up to bursts of speed.
I call it Two Mile Tuesdays, my goal was to get 2 miles in under 30m. Only happened once so far in just over a year.

Only been running for a couple of weeks. It's strange because when I played football last year I could run solidly for 90 mins without the ridiculous burn!!0

I hate running - never do it....other than jogging on the spot. I think they key to weight loss is the stick with whatever you choose to do. If it's the eliptical (which I have and use) or if its group cardio, etc. etc. I have lost and maintained a 40lb weight loss, and I am now working on the last 20 - none of it done with treadmills or running. Do what you enjoy, do it consistently and if thats running, then so be it, but if its not, pick something else. Good luck!

Playing football does not equal continuously running for 90 minutes (at least, not to me).
do you weigh more now? are you sedentary otherwise?
I still stick by the elliptical working your body differently.0 -
Which leg muscles hurt? Calves? quads? shins? hamstrings? All of them?0

It's predominantly the calves and shins. The rest seems ok...very annoying. Is it something which will go over time?0
