When will I start losing fat instead of water?

Hello!

I'm not even sure if this is a valid question but it seems that every time I start a new diet I lose a lot of weight very quickly which I think is down to water weight? I've lose 5lbs so far in ten days and I guess my question is how long does it take your body to start losing fat when you're dieting and exercising regularly?

I'm eating sensibly and exercising as I don't want to lose any muscle.

You have probably already lost some fat. Just keep going, log as accurately as you can and track your weight trends over time. Don't forget you weight will fluctuate regularly so the trend is what is important.

Fat is lost over time with CONSISTENCY on a program of calorie deficit. You'll see it happen if you're consistent.

This is a common question, and one that I asked at the beginning too.

Unfortunately there's no standard answer. Everyone's different. But I personally found that after the first 2-3 weeks of rapid water weight drop, my weight loss started to level off to a more realistic pace.

If you have a lot of weight to lose and you're exercising regularly, you're probably not in danger of losing much muscle mass. 5 pounds in the first 10 days sounds like a pretty typical water weight drop.
