I ended up typing something again and wondered how do you delete a post that you type and don't want it there?

Yep

You hit "Flag" on your own post, then choose "Report"

One of the options that comes up is "This is my post and I want to delete it"

It won't delete immediately (has to be reviewed and deleted by a mod), but unless you're making a habit of doing it, I don't see why they wouldn't.
