Mum and Stepdad want to join but...

My mum has been eternally on a diet and my stepdad has recently been told he has high blood pressure and needs to lose weight - he is approx 6ft and 18 stone, Mum is 5'4 and 10 stone so doesn't need to lose much. This week they have been counting cals without mfp, just as a rough guide to get in the swing and I am staying over next week and will show Mum the ropes while Stepdad is away. However, whilst Mum is interested in trying this the right way (not sure she will be as motivated to learn 2lb a week isn't a healthy loss for her but we shall see) she told me that my Stepdad is adamant he will eat a 1000 calorie a day diet, which I have told her is silly, unhealthy and unsustainable but that is what he says.

I guess I am after advice on how best to tackle this. He hasn't asked for my advice directly but has told Mum he wants her to find out everything whilst he is away for work next week so they can get going. I'm really pleased they want to give this a go, they have said my loss is inspiring (45lb since Sept 2014) but I feel uncomfortable giving them these tools if he is going to be so restrictive with it. What would you do in this situation? I have said that he will be surprised and delighted with how much he could have whilst still losing 2lb a week but he has already got off to an unhealthy start, averaging 850 calories each day and lost 9lbs since Monday (I know a lot of this will be water) and apparently he wants to keep this up. Mum has been having approx 1200-1300 and is down 4lb (also likely water).

Any thoughts?

Show them some of the good beginner posts, the sexypants one especially! Since he is a man show him some of the other guys advice on here about eating and lifting to maintain muscle while he loses. Also how accurately is he logging, if its not that accurate his current goal is probably being way overshot and he does not realize it.
