Activity level vs. iPhone steps/FitBit

Hi there- a quick question about syncing an activity device.
I work in service, so I chose the "lightly active" setting as I'm on my feet roughly 6-8 hours on work days. I also live in NYC so I walk everywhere, just not so much until it warms up again here. Just realized the other day that my iPhone tracks steps so I can sync it up. I'm just concerned - are the calories I get to eat back ( which I will happily eat back! Non-exercise days have me at a 1450 net goal) already accounted for in my activity level? I don't always have my phone on me, but some days I end up walking over 12k steps between work and errands, so it does make a bit of a difference.
Not sure it's relevant, but I put my phone down when I exercise and log that separately.
