Callouses

I have been doing Stronglifts for about 6 weeks, and I am definitely developing some nice callouses on my hands. I don't mind them, but I am finding that they get pinched, a little swollen, and somewhat painful during barbell rows and deadlifts. I've heard lifting gloves are not a great idea because they impede grip, but what can I do to make the callouses less painful? Chalk? Grip work?

Good luck. After 3 years of lifting it has only gotten worse as the weights have gotten heavier.

I count mine, I earned them and I am proud of each one.

A lot of people use chalk. I just make sure mine are trimmed/sanded down before I lift.

I'd been having some problems with mine and had someone explain that I needed to change my grip a bit. I switched it so the bar is resting higher, right on my callouses instead of below them (which causes the pinching), and that fixed the problem for me.

I use chalk. After 2 solid years of lifting I have them but they are like soft and smooth and never tear open anymore. Sometimes there's a little piece of skin that sort of comes loose and I just chew it off.

I use just a plain old emery to maintain/file my callouses. Still rip from time to time.

    When they rip, I apply...

Every time I'm in the shower they peel up a little and I rub away anything loose. I have 8 callouses and have never ripped one open--they're all pretty flat.

I use gloves when my hands start to hurt. Mine are very lightweight lycra with an extra-grippy palm.

Any advise for callouses whilst rowing? Absolute nightmare!

    Never?

Sometimes, even with the best management, I'll rip one off while deadlifting.

Few weeks ago while deadlifting, my left thumb was over my index finger and as I was gripping so hard I created a blister and then it ripped off.
