Pattypan Squash?

We took a trip to our farmer's market this past weekend and I noticed every vendor had heaps of pattypan squash. I've never had it before and it looks difficult to work with. I googled and it says it's good to eat raw? I've never had squash raw before in other varieties and wouldn't think they would taste good (butternut, banana, or zucchini) that way, what makes the pattypan different?

Would love to know what you do with your pattypan squash as I'd like to pick some up this weekend and give it a try since it's in season and very low cost :).

Pattypan can be cooked the same as other squash -- baked, broiled, grilled, etc. My Mom and other family members stuff them and bake them. Or, cut thick slices and grill them. I like a very simple squash. I cut a slice off of the stem end so the squash will sit flat. Then I cut about 1/2 - 1 inch slice from the top so I can remove the "innards". Rub a little margarine over the inside of the squash and sprinkle with salt and pepper ... then bake. If you like squash, I'm sure you'll enjoy this variety. If you like stuffed squash, there are a lot of recipes online that you can adapt to your family's taste. Enjoy!!

Ooh, that recipe sounds good! I love squash but have never tried pattypan squash.

Raw squash is good in salads. It adds some color. :) The only squash I've tried raw is yellow summer squash and zucchini though!
  • Pattypan squash is a variety of zucchini. It's great grilled plain or sauteed with a little onion and garlic. I agree that it's great in salads and I even like it on a veggie platter for something different.
