What people usually refer to as "calories" is in fact kcal. So if e.g. your goal is 1800 calories per day, this means 1800 kcal.0

- calorie = the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1mL of water by 1 degree Celsius
- Calorie (note the big C) = Kilocalorie (kcal) = 1,000 calories. This is the amount of energy needed to raise 1L of water by 1 degree Celsius. This is also the measurement of the energy found in food.
