Cardio vs. weight lifting pics

My daughter does not believe me when I tell her that in order to tone up, she needs to add weight lifting to her regimen.

Anyone wanna share before/after pics to show her that weights are a good sculpting tool?

Are you or her familiar with pubmed? That's a database of scientific studies. They can range from pilot studies to experiments with controls and blinding. If you have the time, search "weight training fat loss" and skim through the dozens (hundreds?) of studies that conclude weight training/resistance training is very beneficial for fat loss.

If you wikipedia "weight training" you also get this excerpt ... "The body's basal metabolic rate increases with increases in muscle mass, which promotes long-term fat loss and helps dieters avoid yo-yo dieting. Moreover, intense workouts elevate metabolism for several hours following the workout, which also promotes fat loss." There's some references at the bottom of the page.

If you need anecdotal evidence, and no one posts any pictures here, then I'm sure there are some great threads in the Success Stories part of the messageboards (http://www.myfitnesspal.com/forums/show/15-success-stories) that talk about weight training. It seems like I see one or two everyday.

    Hope this helps!

Thanks! I don't want her heavy lifting (she will be 14 in November and that isn't the best, I have heard)...but I don't think that some squats and lunges and planks and weights will hurt her!

I doubt that at 14 she needs to "tone up".
Teach her about nutrition, everything in moderation, and keep her active in sports she enjoys.

there is no developmental reason for a kid to not lift heavy - growth stunting is vastly over exaggerated
