Stavation mode for cars

I've discovered that cars also have a 'starvation' mode.

A full gas tank will confuse your car into thinking it can run forever so it doesn't care how many miles per gallon it gets.

I would always fill up my car with gas and was always trying to get better miles-per-gallon but my gas mileage hit a plateau.

So I started to shock the engine by putting in a half tank one week, then a full tank the next week, then a week of no driving, and then back to the full tank again.

Also I never fill up after 8 o'clock at night.

I think its working, my miles-per-gallon is improving.

Does it change things if your is automatic or manual? Does this apply to diesel?
  • ive often wondered if this were possible

Ive always noticed my gauge seems to drop faster for the last 1/4 than the first and assumed that this was becasue it had had its fill and was feeling lathargic but when it got down to the last quater it was feeling lean and full of energy

Ocarina, I would think transmission would have an impact on Mustangs289's theory, as the "Shock" would be more evedent in a manual car as it has a less relaxed personalty

As for diesel, v petrol I dont know perpaps Mustang has an opinon on this
