Pedometer and Activity Level

I'm trying to get a better handle on my activity level on a daily basis, so I got a pedometer. I'm keeping it on all day, except for when I'm working out. Is there a way to roughly convert steps to the "Activity Level" labels that MFP uses (sedentary/lightly active/etc.).
I know the most accurate thing would be to set activity level to sedentary and then enter every bit of walking I do (I walk to/from work every day), every time I run around with my kid, etc. but I'd rather not label those as "exercise". My reasoning is that if I start thinking of my every day, naturally occurring activity as "exercise," then I would probably use that as an excuse not to go to the gym. I'm trying to work *with* my psychology, not against it :-)
