loosing weight means wrecking tattoos?

I have quite a few tattoos on my thighs ankle and lower back, every person I know has made some type of comment since I started trying to lose weight about how I wasted all this money on tattoos over the last few years just to have them wrecked when I lose weight.
Is this truely the case? Are they all going to require coverups or is everyone I talk to just being dumb? Does anyone have experience with this issue? Were your tattoos disfigured during your journey?

There was a thread on Reddit about this the other day. The general concensus seemed to be that if you loose weight at a slow/practical pace it's not going to mess up your tattoo. Maybe you'll notice a change if you've got some quotes in tiny font, but I wouldn't worry too much Skin shrinks and tattoos shrink with them.
Honestly I think gaining a ton of weight would probably be more detrimental to a tattoo.0 -
I have one on my shoulder which has survived me losing over a hundred pounds. Though, I imagine that the shoulder is about as safe a place as is possible in terms of stretching/shrinking. Some may change forms a little, which sucks, but it beats staying heavy indefinitely just to protect a little ink.0

I've never heard of tattoo disfiguring from weight loss. I weighed 130 pounds when I got my first tattoo (and entire forearm sleeve) and my second from one shoulder blade to another. I got pregnant, went up to weighing 203, and now I'm 183 and hopefully about to lose more, my tattoos still looks as good as ever0

my tats have stayed the same, I was tiny when I got some of them (ED), then a normal size, then a little overweight, then back down to normal again. They deform more with extra weight more than anything, then as long as your skin shrinks back normally they just go back to looking how they did when you got it.0

I suppose it depends greatly on the amount of weight that's lost.
I lost near 40 lbs over a year or so and all my ink is fine. (Back, ankles, calves).0 -
I had a patient whos tattoo on her arm shrankafter her gastric bypass. Keep them hydrated and gentle circulation inducing massage and you will be fine0

One of the many reasons I have no tatoos.0

I've lost around 85 pounds since getting my tattoo on my thigh and haven't really noticed any significant change. I will say it seems perhaps a little smaller but still completely intact. I would be concerned if you had rapid weight loss since the skin does take a while to snap back, the younger you are the faster the skin snaps back.0

This is one reason I got mine on my ankle. It is the one place that is still a bit discreet but also doesn't change with gains or losses.0
