Mini exercise bike

I have a mini exercise bike that I bought from Argos. It counts repetitions, time spent on the bike and calories. I wonder if 30 minutes a day on this is suitable for weight loss, certainly a starting point anyway as I realise this may not be quite enough on it's own.

Thanks

I have one of the portable pedals. It doesn't increase my heart rate much but its incredibly motivating and better than sitting stationary to watch TV. I count the calories burned as 1 per minute because I don't believe in eating away my progress but want the satisfaction of record keeping

Losing weight is about eating less and/or moving more. Eating less is the most efficient way to a calorie deficit. Sure, exercise burns calories, but it's more important for health and fitness reasons. 1/2 hour a day is certainly a good start.

Calorie burn from exercise is tough to estimate though. MFP gives you exercise calories back for a reason (because it's not included up front). Most users of MFP will eat a portion of their calories back to prevent the deficit from becoming too large. A large deficit makes me cranky, plus I want to support lean muscle as much as I can while dieting.
