Any suggestions on how to give motivation and support?

I want to be a better friend/pal to those I've already friended. I check in via private message, if I see they haven't been on the site within a few days. I read their food diaries when they've posted. I give atta-boys/atta-girls when appropriate (for exercise/eating healthy). I give words of encouragement when they feel down or may have not done as well as they'd hoped.

However (there is always a "but") here is where I run into trouble: when they consistently under-eat (it happens to me on occasion too, so I'm not throwing stones) but when they don't even figure out their TDEE or BMR, even after I give them the links (or give them links to the forum threads where it's covered repeatedly) how am I suppose to help them?

If they consistently over-eat, yet say they don't know what they're doing wrong...yet won't take healthy eating advice...then what?

I don't like giving up on anyone and I don't like walking away from a challenge...but I also dislike banging my head against a wall.

I want to be a better friend on their journey, but I'm obviously missing the needed skills. Any constructive suggestions would be appreciated!
