Bone pain and muscle weakness are common symptoms. You can get liquid vitamin d (my wife got blueberry flavour) to help get your levels back up.

Also exhaustion, depression (or just a general feeling of being blue or down)

I had issues with pain in my joints, specifically my knees and thumbs and hair shedding. I also have anemia which share similar symptoms with Vitamin D deficiency, so it was hard to tell which deficiency caused which symptom.

In my case, vitamin D deficiency resulted in broken hip bones and edema at 30! ... now that I take a supplement (and try to get sunlight when it's not frigid!), my energy is up, my seasonal depression was basically absent, and my little patches of psoriasis have healed. Bones are getting stronger too.

Be aware, you can get too much, so work with a doctor or pharmacist on this one.

Vitamin D promotes calcium absorption in the gut and maintains adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations to enable normal mineralization of bone ... It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling ... Without sufficient vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen.
Vitamin D-deficient diets are associated with milk allergy, lactose intolerance, ovo-vegetarianism, and veganism.

Rickets and osteomalacia are the classical vitamin D deficiency diseases.
In children, vitamin D deficiency causes rickets, a disease characterized by a failure of bone tissue to properly mineralize, resulting in soft bones and skeletal deformities.

Prolonged exclusive breastfeeding without vitamin D supplementation is a significant cause of rickets, particularly in dark-skinned infants ... Additional causes of rickets include extensive use of sunscreens and placement of children in daycare programs, where they often have less outdoor activity and sun exposure. Rickets is also more prevalent among immigrants from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, possibly because of genetic differences in vitamin D metabolism and behavioral differences that lead to less sun exposure.

In adults, vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteomalacia, resulting in weak bones. Symptoms of bone pain and muscle weakness can indicate inadequate vitamin D levels, but such symptoms can be subtle and go undetected in the initial stages.

Because it affects calcium absorption, vitamin D can have an indirect effect on nerve activity & muscle contraction.
For most adults, the RDI is 600 IU, and the upper limit is 4,000 (which you're unlikely to reach without taking vitamin capsules).

For me I had no energy, depression, and my joints ached more than usual. I have arthritis so I never thought anything of it until a blood test revealed I was deficient. Now I'm taking supplements and it's definitely eased the pain.

A bit late to the party but in case someone is searching this topic, found this: http://www.everydayhealth.com/news/signs-you-may-have-vitamin-d-deficiency/

Thought it was interesting that anxiety for no reason is included as a symptom!
