Just ran my first 50k (32 miles) ultra - Ask me Anything

I just finished my first 50k trail ultra marathon, the Music City Trail Ultra this past Saturday. I realized I'm way too cocky, and that I don't know much of anything about ultras and it cost me dearly.

I do now though. I learned a lot, and thought that chaffing only occurred between thighs. I was wrong. Never knew that I could get severe chaffing in between my *kitten* cheeks but it happened. My overall time after getting lost was 9 hrs. 8 minutes.

  • That's insane! Congratulations! How did you train for that?

Actually trained for 14 weeks for a traditional marathon, then decided 30 days out to run the ultra. After that I changed training for the last 30 days, focusing on back to back days of long runs on the weekend. Ultras are about "time on feet" more than just running.

Lots of trail work (but not enough), and long runs 16-20 miles.

To run an ultra properly, there needs to be a full 16-20 week training plan to achieve it. I didn't have that luxury but now I know what to expect and what I need to work on!!

Congratulations! Lately I've been doing lots of reading about ultras and would love to see one someday.
