My tonsils have always been enormous. And at 40, I am considering having them out mainly because of snoring and annual sinus infections.

But not only is it more painful, it is supposed to be more risky.

So I, too, am interested in any responses you get here.

More risky how? The only thing besides the pain that I would be concerned about is bleeding. Im not worried about getting put under.

I had mine removed during Junior year in high school. It was so painful, it certainly didn't help that pain pills don't do jack for me. I only regret it while I was in pain after that I was so happy I went through with it.
I had mine removed because they were affecting my breathing. The doctor looked at them and went "woah!"

I had mine removed as an adult and I will not lie to you. It was more painful than natural child birth. Yes, I am serious. Slightly less painful that a kidney stone. The plus side, the pain only lasts a few days and you will have far less throat issues after it's all done.

I didn't have any unusual complications. I was told the reason it is so painful as an adult is because over time, you develop layers upon layers of scar tissue from the number of times you had a flare up. In order to fix it, they have to cut deep enough to remove all that scar tissue. Cool liquids will be your new best friend and it will definitely kick start your weight loss. You won't want to eat solids for a few days.

Pain last for only a few days??!!!!!???!!!! I had weeks of it. I even went back in cause we thought it was hurting too long. Doctor told me that it's normal. Even said that I was heal better than he expected.

I did lose 20 pound during that time.
    Mine never opened up.

I don't think you really want to know what it feels like but I will give you the best description I can think of. Imagine if you drank a molten lava, acid, sandpaper, nail cocktail. Now, imagine drinking that every fifteen minutes for 5 days straight or more.

Health benefits will outweigh the pain. They can contribute to sleep apnea. I would do it if it hadn't been done 39 years ago

Had mine out when I was 22. Had a rough first couple of days... but best decision ever.

Does anyone know if you dont have tonsillitis issues then would the pain be less since the pain is due to scar tissue well having to go so deep bc of scar tissue i should say?

It would make sense that the less invasive the surgery, the less pain involved but I can't say for sure.

I had mine removed 3 years ago after getting Strep Throat four times in a month and a half. No antibiotics could kill it so my ENT doc said I needed to have them removed. He said it would be very unpleasant but that I would be okay if I took it easy and didnt bust my stitches while I recovered. That meant staying out of work for three weeks, no lifting or strain or strenuous exercise, only eating liquids and soft foods as tolerated. It was a drag, was very uncomfortable but I did what the doc said and lived on chicken soup and cherry ices. I still have dryness issues in my throat and have to keep water next to my bed every night but it was totally worth it! I tend to get less colds now as well which is a nice bonus.
