Getting back on track....and staying on it!

Hi folks,
I've a history of yo-yo dieting and inconsistent exercise. I was an avid bodybuilder in high school, and was active in martial arts and raquet sports. Since college, my efforts towards health have been an on and off affair, with no commitment lasting longer than 2-3 months. Now I'm 40, married with two small kids. If i'm going to make a lasting lifestyle change i need to do it sooner rather than later.
I'm very competitive and meticulous, so every time i get back on the wagon everything has to be perfect. The diet becomes super strict right away, and at the gym i try to pick up with powerlifting poundages like i used in high school. Both of these practices instantly set me up for failure within a matter of weeks. Cheat meals become cheat weekends, and workouts leave me either injured or unable to move for days. I am trying to look at the big picture instead of the quick fix, so i do not plan to repeat those mistakes this time around.
I'll make separate posts in the other relevant sections, so as to avoid a "tl:dr" (too long, didn't read). To make a long story short, i'm committed to learning this new lifestyle and hope we can all support each other in our efforts.
Cheers,
Rob
