Can someone explain what net calories means? I realise this makes me sound really dense but I just cant figure out either the math or the relevance of this figure.
I eat 1440 calories a day. When I gain calories from exercise (I have my fitbit connected to MFP and I add calories from my HRM when I train) I aim to eat about half of them but allow myself the flexibility to eat 100% of them if I am hungry or tired from the exercise.
So - lets say I burn 600 calories from running. I can eat 1440 + 300. So where does NET come into it?

Say your MFP initial calories are 1440 (gross calories)
And you eat 1440 and do no exercise - BAM! gross calories = net calories
But
Say your MFP initial calories are 1440
And you eat 1440 but do 300 calories worth of additional exercise which MFP did not account for in your initial target.
you've still eaten 1440 calories (gross figure), but MFP wants you to net that amount and takes away the extra 300 calories you've burned in exercise
so now MFP says "actually you have only netted 1140 calories (eg 1440-300) so eat another 300 to hit your net calorie goal of 1440"

easy your net calories in your example of eating 1440-600(exercise) is NET 860 and you really need to NET at least 1200....so you should be eating at least 360 of your burn back

Perfect! Theoretically you can eat 1440 and 600, so net 2040, but MFP overestimates burns. Thus half the burn is 300, plus your 1440 = 1740.0 -
Help! I still don't understand this. If my daily goal is 1200 calories then I exercise so MFP increases my daily goal to 1365. Does this mean that MFP is evening up the calories in to calories out ratio? If I want to loose weight do I stick with the 1200 calorie goal?0

If your goal is 1200 and you exercise and burn 165 calories you goal will go up to 1365 as you rightly say. The 165 that you earned are yours to do whatever you want with! Personally I eat half and save half for Friday night takeaway cheat meal0
