Runner's pain is no pulled muscle; it's a baby

This article came across my Twitter feed today - UM Ive never had a pulled muscle like this - and having given birth to 2 kids, I will NEVER understand not knowing you are pregnant - I had my oldest 6 weeks early and this baby was 5 weeks early and weighed 6lb 6oz....I would think being a Marathon runner she would have been a bit more in tune with her body! :noway:

DULUTH, Minn. - An aspiring half-marathon runner in Minnesota attributed her unbearable back pain to a two-hour training session. A day later, she was cradling a newborn.

Trish Staine, 33, says she had no idea she was pregnant before Monday's surprise birth. The Duluth mother of three said she hadn't gained any weight or felt fetal movement in the months before. And besides, her husband had a vasectomy.

"I said `no, no, that's impossible,' " Staine said Wednesday from her Duluth hospital room.

"I definitely thought I was done having kids," she joked. Staine and her husband, John, have a daughter, 7, and a son, 11. She's also stepmother to John's three boys, ages 17, 19 and 20.

Staine said she ran for about two hours Sunday in preparation for the Garry Bjorklund half-marathon on June 22.

"I had a sore back Sunday evening. I had taken a hot shower and was dealing with it," Staine said. "Monday morning, I woke up and had more back pain, and as the day went on it got worse. I thought I should go to the ER. I thought I ruptured a disc or pulled a muscle."

But she soldiered on, watching her husband play basketball at noon and going to her daughter's short play. When Staine got home, she thought a bath might help her pain.

As she talked to her husband on the phone, Staine said her pain was becoming unbearable. Her husband called an ambulance.

"I felt like I was dying. I didn't know what was going on," she said.

During the emergency room examination, Staine and her husband were stunned to learn medical staff had detected a fetal heartbeat. She was whisked to the delivery room and in what she said seemed like 5 minutes later, her daughter was born at 3:25 p.m. Monday. She weighed 6 pounds, 6 ounces, and was 18.9 inches long.

Staine said her husband has a good sense of humor.

"He's still in shock. Everybody is teasing him," she said.

Born about 5 weeks early, the Staines expect they will be able to take their baby home in about a week, a girl they have named Mira — short for Miracle.

Could she really have been in so much denial that she didn't put two and two together?? I mean, if she had never been pregnant or given birth, I could maybe buy it... but not after two kids...

Makes me wonder if she is one of those moms who had never been in labor, just had elective c-sections... I cannot imagine not knowing I was in labor, let alone not knowing I was pregnant!

If her BMI is low enough and with that much activity she might not have regular periods. The female body is a strange beast, but I know quite a few responsible and aware women who have had this happen.

But don't you think she would have felt the baby move, or thought, "gosh, I wonder why my belly is kinda bloated?" ... I mean, especially if she had a really low BF%, she shouldn't have missed a 6lb person inside her.

I understand the periods being weird etc - and I agree female bodies can be crazy - I really thought the baby was going to be small - but it was almost full term and weighed 6lb 6oz....it seems there would have been some belly extension or weird movement in there? - Im happy the baby was healthy as that could have been a very dangerous situation

I think the answer is obvious. She thought babies came by stork. What a surprise that turned out to be.

I think she knew she was pregnant, but because she cheated on her husband, she just kept putting off telling him. It's the old "act surprised" approach.

actually, many men don't go for the follow up appointment to check sperm count after a vasectomy. I know of a few cases where that happened lol :)

With my oldest I weighed 117lbs at 7mnths prego had no belly bulge or felt hardly any movement it just depends on how your body is built how toned and how the baby lays...by the way I gave birth 21 inches long 6lbs 11oz my last 3 weeks is when I went from size 4 to size 8...I found out I was pregnant at 5mnths along.. So I can see somewhat not really knowing since you think you had it taken care of and no changes in body.

I never felt my 1st baby move at all. Ever. It happens when your placenta is in the front, so you don't feel the kicks or squirms. And some women still get their periods. And, to be fair, you wouldn't even contemplate a 2hr run if you knew there was a bun in the oven.
    Poor, poor, surprised woman!

I don't get it either. She must have had some abdomen distension... I guess she must've thought she was bloated. Honestly I do know girls who get bloated enough to look about five or six months pregnant. I have told both said females they should go to a doctor to see what's causing it (neither have been pregnant while displaying this) however seems to happen when they eat processed foods, or breads. Neither have gone.

Well she isn't a marathoner, she is an "An aspiring half-marathon runner". This means she may have started running after she got pregnant and attributed some of the body/period changes to that. Also, not super low BF% from the news story pic.

my question has always been, do you ever wonder why there is something wedged between your ribs? my kids repeatedly kicked me in the ribs and like to jam their feet up there

If you've ever seen the show, I didn't know I was pregnant, it happens all the time.

I can totally believe this happening... Some people just don't get symptoms.

Actually with my oldest, I thought I had pulled a muscle in my back..2.5 hours later I had a baby. Even the dr was confused by the lack of feeling anything. The other 2 were a different story. I did know I was pregnant though
