Fitbits and garmins

Hey all - I want to use my tax refund to buy stuff for my health and I've been thinking about getting a fitbit/garmin/etc.
I don't think I NEED it for my health but it would be cool to see an accurate number of calories burned!
Are they accurate for tracking calories burned? What ones do you like/dislike and why? Overall, is it worth it? Thanks!
Edit: I am a swimmer and would use one that's waterproof if possible
