70 minutes a day doesn't sound fun at all, unless you really really like doing it.

I would start with getting your calories right and resistance training for about 30 minutes 3x a week.

Weight loss comes from a calorie deficiency. How you look with that weight loss comes from the exercise.
Keep within your calorie goals (set a goal to lose 1 lb/week; that's the right setting for your weight loss goal) and keep working out on the elliptical. The speed won't matter much and you'll probably get faster as you get stronger. Don't worry about that aspect of it now.
    You're on the right track.

I like to use the elliptical too, but even on a good day I can only manage about 45 minutes! I agree with the others that say to get your calorie goals and logging under control to lose weight, and then work towards building your exercise goal to help you tone and strengthen. I like to do a combination of elliptical and kettlebell strength training for a good workout a couple of times a week. You can friend me if you would like.

Calorie deficit=weight loss, exercise=fitness. Yes, it helps with the deficit, but MFP is set so you can lose without exercise if you choose to.

Slower on the elliptical will put you in a fat burning zone as opposed to cardio. Since you're not racing keep it slower. You can calculate your zone if the elliptical doesn't have that function. The most common formula is called Karvonen.

Not knowing your height, resting heart rate, exercise history, age, etc, it is a mix of less calories and increased metabolic rate. You may friend me if you'd like. I am a Certified Personal Trainer and own my business.
