Set per Side or Set per Total?

I'm not sure how to record my sets...
Should I do set per side or should I do set per total done both sides?
Ie. Side Lunges
Set 1 right side, 10 reps. Set 2 left side, 10 reps...
OR
Right side 10 reps + left side 10 reps = 1 set of 10 reps for lunges

Does it make a difference?
Personally a set is equal numbers on both sides to me0 -
As long as you record things the same way every time, and know what it means to you, does it really matter which way you do it?
That being said, I always think a set is the equal number on both sides.0
