Help me run faster

I do bootcamp workouts which I love but they do involve quite a bit of running. Usually 5-10 laps around a building (sometimes carrying dumbells, a bocu ball, etc). I find I'm the SLOWEST on the in class and it's incredibly frustrating. I have no problems with any of the other exercises we do. I also am the only one I noticed that carries the excess fat around the middle however my arms and legs are incredibly toned. Our run yesterday was 10 laps around the building (approx 1 mile) not carrying anything - I got lapped by the same guy 3 times. By the time I was on lap 6 or 7 he was done. I should mention I don't walk during this - I'm just that slow. I also can't carry on a conversation because I'm always out of breath when I run. I'm guessing the only way to improve and get faster is to work on running outside of class? I asked my trainer and he said I just have to run.

Yep. More running. Work on volume, not speed... speed will come.

Yep. Just run more. You will probably get all kinds of advice on interval training and stuff like that, but honestly, if you are struggling with running a mile, these are not going to be of any use to you. Running on your own at a slower pace is what is going to help the most. I am not saying you shouldn't be breathing hard, but you should not be gasping for breath and you should be able to carry on a conversation. Have you thought about looking into a couch to 5K app? I personally have never done it, but there are a ton of people on here who have used it with great results.

Like others have said run more. The speed will come the more you run. When I started back to running I was at 11:45 min mile...1 1/2 year later and marathon training I am any where 9:45-8:40 depending on distance.

Good luck! Oh and I was once the slowest in the class as well.

Keep running. Also carrying less weight will make you faster. Just note that being faster doesn't equate to always being healthier.
While I know it sucks for others to be faster and get done quicker than you, I'd focus more on the QUALITY of what you're doing rather than how much faster you can do it.

Keep running and you will eventually get faster. Work on building distance.
