Walkers: what is your stride length and how did you calculate it?

I have been trying to set my stride length and each way of calculating comes with a significantly different number. I did the take 10 steps and measure, measure 100 feet and count how many steps, walk one lap on the short track at the fitness club, walk one mile on the track. I recently downloaded the Map my Run app and have been using that while also running my Fitbit and using the data from those two apps. Over the course of several walks of varying lengths and terrain I have been averaging 28.46 inches per step.

Just curious what others have done and what your stride is.

Mine is 31.5 inches walking and 44 inches running (moderate pace) so your calculation sounds reasonable. I used a garmin GPS to walk a measured distance and counted the steps with a fitbit.

I did the Map My Run vs. Fitbit steps to figure mine. ~31 inches per step (mostly flat/paved terrain).

Thanks to both of you. I reset my Fitbit to a 28" stride length (it had been at 26") so I am now pretty confident I have it as close as possible. I will periodically check it but I think I have it pretty good.

Another simple method ... get the bottom of your feet/shoes wet ... walk a few steps ... measure distance from heel to heel or toe to toe of the footprints.

From long experience I know that I do just about 1000 strides (2000 steps) per mile. That works out to just under 32 inches per step.

I took whatever the default for height number was and subtracted two inches (my legs are short in comparison to my height). I have measured using a couple of different treadmills and my number seems about right.
