I know water is good for you in general, and the loose guidelines are 8 cups a day. Is there a benefit to drinking MORE when trying to lose weight?

Nope. And that is just a guideline. Studies have shown that fluid intake is not a one size fits all type of thing. I say fluid and not water because all fluid count. A better way to tell if you need more or less is by urine color. The darker it is, the more you need to drink. If it is a pale yellow you are hydrated enough.

It's good for staying hydrated. So is tea and coffee.

Some people get a full feeling from the water if they drink a glass before a meal, thus they eat less, putting them in a caloric deficit. I have personally gotten past that point. I'm so used to drinking a gallon a day that it doesn't fill me up anymore.

One other thing that I found beneficial about it:

I gained weight because I was snacking and mindlessly eating too much. When I started losing I cut out all my snacks, and I now only eat 3 square meals a day. I drink tea/coffee/water in place of snacking or when I get the munchies. It helps to satisfy the constant hand-to-mouth action I wanted.

Is that what it is? Our bodies get used to it? Cause I drink a little over a gallon a day of water and at first i would feel full most of the day between that and my meals, and now it doesn't make me feel as full as it did before. Never thought of that.

hm interesting! I knew the urine/colour thing - I always tell my kids that too ;) I had heard that drinking enough water was important for your metabolism. Is that just grasping at straws? myths and legends of the weightloss world? ;)

If I recall my Anatomy & Physiology class correctly - and it's been quite a while, fat requires water molecules for transportation to where it is needed as fuel. There is more to it, but I just don't recall. If you are under-hydrated, the water will be used for more vital purposes; like temperature regulation or whatever.
