So we are going out to a local Mexican place for dinner tonight & I was looking for help on how to log calories? It's a hole-in-the-wall place with no dietary info on their menu. Bringing my scale would be no good, as I am not going deconstruct whatever ends up on my plate to weigh each individual ingredient. Would you eyeball the ingredients & estimate each weight or would you try to find something "similar" in the database and just log that?

yup. But I order fajitas a lot at Mexican places and that makes comparison quite easy.

In these situations, I find something similar in the database and log that. Don't stress about it too much, but make sure you log the chips and salsa too!

That's what I did the last time I went out for Mexican. I tried to be as accurate as I could and didn't sweat the fact it put me way over (darn those beans and rice, my favorites!). Luckily it doesn't happen too often. GL!

I don't even try to log that stuff... I just write it in my "notes" section

I usally do fajitas too but that's just because I don't like beans and rice and sour cream. I recently switched over to using corn tortillas, all the entries show them to be about half the calories of flour tortillas so I have have more!
To me, this is easier to eyeball a serving of meat and vegetables to log.
It's the damn chips, salsa and queso that can put me over my calorie limit for the day

This. Just type in "huevos rancheros" or whatever & you'll find a comparable. Sure, it won't be exact, but it'll be in the ballpark and you'll feel better about logging it.

Oh, and damn you, chips and salsa. DAMN YOU.

Order what sounds good, eat only half of what is served to you. Take the rest to go. When you get it home and can have the time to "pick over it" log to your best guess. Drink lots of water (all restaurants are bad with their added sodium) and move on.

So I think that I did well...ordered chicken fajitas, only ate 2 with no extras (no cheese, only a smear of sour cream). Had a couple glasses of wine and still came pretty close to my goals. Not gonna worry about it, hitting the gym early tomorrow morning :-) Thanks everyone for your advice & support :D

We have a weekly date night at our favorite Mexican place. I am not giving it up even if I go over. I have tried ordering "healthier" things and count out my chips. I have asked them to give me grilled veggies instead of the rice and beans and that has been yummy. It's the darn margaritas that put me over!
