I realized I don't know jack. Some of the machines that I used to use aren't there. There were some women there doing exercises I have never seen before! Ugh. I felt like such a loser!!!
Any tips and ideas on some weight lifting exercises? Do more free weights instead of machines?

Pick up a beginner programme. Starting Strength, Stronglifts 5x5, Strong Curves are all good IMO (free weight programmes).

Also New Rules of Lifting for Women. Or hire a good personal trainer. Yes, prioritize freeweights. Cable machines are ok.

    Cosign both of these.

You feel foolish because you don't have any knowledge. Do some research on these programs and you'll feel a LOT better.

Get in there and get after it. Be proud of yourself you took took a step in the right direction!

Does your gym have personal training or orientation services? Why not schedule an appointment with someone who can show you the proverbial ropes? Then, if you're comfortable with free weights/lifting heavy, you can try a program like the ones recommended above. If you'd rather stick with machines and bodyweight stuff, the trainer can probably help you develop a solid program there, too. Either way, you'll end up MUCH more confident. :)
