How to log exercise: Finding the right hiking

I'm not a great logger, but want to start.
So I went hiking today, and I'm having problems logging it. Logging it as Hiking, MFP says I burned 1,368 calories (the lowest alternative I found), which seems really high to me. What should I log as? Should I get a fitbit or similar (that seems excessive to me, but if it works better?)

I logged under walking and matched the time to a rough mileage using Google maps and local roads to guestimate. I haven't found any good trail guides with partial trail mileage listed. And local hiking trails groups haven't returned calls ask about books to locate trails.0
