you just started lifting and your body isnt used to it yet. In another 4-6 weeks (ish), theres typically a whoosh and your body drops the "gained" weight

It's all very normal. Lifting heavy is a great exercise but it's all new to your body. At the moment it's thinking 'wtf are you doing??!!'. That is good!
When you lift heavy you are constantly damaging and repairing so your body will be building muscle and retaining water - and hopefully burning fat.

It is a very slow process but it's my favourite thing to do. Enjoy!

As above, by lifting weights you're causing tissue breakdown and microscopic tears in the muscle tissue. Your body doesn't like this and wants to protect the tissue, it does this by inflammation and fluid retention.

Completely natural to see a 3-4lb gain in scale weight within a few weeks of starting.

Do cardio and lift weights. eat 1800 and ensure 1g per lean kg (total weight * bf% = bf then total weight - bf = lean ) is protein calories (1g protein = 4 calories). You may gain a little weight from eating more and you will gain a little weight from lifting weights, but dont worry, its normal. The weight lifting will ensure you dont lose muscle while dropping any bodyfat and the cardio is what will really burn the body fat off (especially HIIT cardio).

    Agree with previous posts.

But for additional clarity, how much did you gain? Day-to-day fluctuations of 5lbs or more can be pretty common. Worry more about long term trends in weight, not short term fluctuations.

Yep, you're going to wake up one morning and say "Hey! Where did this body come from?!" because overnight you're going to see a big difference in your appearance.

I'm not trying to hijack this post but I have a question that fits right in here. I'm 5'8 and started at 147lbs. I'm 7 weeks into lifting 3-4x /week, no cardio. I weighed myself today and I'm up one lb. I've been eating about 1700 calories per day for the last two weeks (up from the 1400 I started with). I'm seeing muscle gain but I want to see fat loss. Are you saying I should see this dip in weight start to happen soon? I was thinking my calories were too high.

One pound in seven weeks? That's well within normal fluctuations. Sounds like absolute perfection on the numbers to me.

When lifting, more muscle mass is a good thing. These forums are LOADED with pics of girls who weigh 10 pounds more after lifting and are slimmer because of it. I'm guessing that's what you want.
