Garmin makes a swim specific device ... there are Polar, Garmin, and Tomtom multisport devices that also count laps ... but they all depend on the accelerometer detecting the change in direction, usually from the push off the wall, to identify the end of a pool length. I haven't seen any reviews that assess their accuracy for water walking.0

Are you looking for an automatic lap-counter or do you just want one that you yourself click at the end of each lap? Both are available at SwimOutlet.com Some swim watches are very expensive. I am looking at a small combo lap-counter/heart-rate monitor that fits onto the goggles and is being developed by these people: http://www.instabeat.me/1

I use COUNTU Goal as my swimming tracker. It works as timer and lap counter, and the most useful feature is vibrate alarm function. Only $38, worth it.
