For lawmakers, a debt ceiling suspension is like a game of pretend. As in "We don't want to publicly vote for an actual increase to cover all the spending we've already approved. So let's pretend the debt ceiling doesn't exist for awhile

We need to cut spending, period. We cannot keep increasing the debt limits or we will ruin our economy. Once the cuts are approved then approve the increase to cover what we have already spent and hopefully stop living on credit cards. Its a budget just like the one you keep. It would be silly to say I have 60k on credit cards already so I need to take out an equity loan to pay the minimum payment for another year while I continue to spend at the same level. Hard choices need to be made.
