I went to the doctors yesterday and found out I weigh more than I thought. But I am more motivated now to be fit and healthy than I was before!

At the doctors office they have to have the scales calibrated on a regular basis, so if you weigh more there your personal scale is the one that is off.

At the doctors office, you are usually wearing clothing and shoes, etc. You've eaten already that day most of the time and have ingested fluids, etc. It's not the ideal time to weigh yourself seriously, in my opinion, no matter how accurate the scale may be.

My doctors office weighs me with everything on.

Idk about your doctor's office, but mine have always had the scale out in a hallway where people can see so you get weighed with your clothes on, plus you've probably had something to eat (unless a fasting appt). At home, I can be naked and weigh before I eat.

I go with the scale I use the most which is my home one.

I dress light for my doctor appointments and I always take my shoes off before I get on the scale. They get annoyed sometimes, but I don't care.

That was one of the motivators that got me started on this trek. Stepped on a friend's scale for sh*ts and giggles only to find out I was 30lb heavier than I thought I was. That was a kick in the teeth.

That's why what I do is take a detour back home right after the doctor's visit (no eating, no drinking, not even stopping to use the restroom if I can avoid it), and I weigh myself as they weighed me in the doctor's office. That way, I can check how accurate my home scale is. In my experience, my home scale has been showing the same weight as the doctor's scale.

Then, when I measure myself after waking up and without food, water, or clothing weight, I can expect that reading to be accurate.

Of course, I'm helped by the fact that my house is relatively close to the doctor's office, so it's easy for me to stop by on my way back to work.

  • Thanks guys! I just need to keep at this! I just started a new set of medication that can cause weight gain, so I need to stay super fit! :)

My doctors try to reassure me that they automatically subtract weight for things like clothes and shoes. But, while the additional weight in my clothing may be negligibly more, my shoes are men's size 15s they probably add notably more weight than the US mens' average size of 10.5.
