People who follow IIFYM?!

Anyone who follows the IIFYM?!
Needing a bit of help getting started!

Originally I started MFP at 185lbs I lost 30 plus some eating only 1200 calories a day, but for someone who works out 4 days a week lifting and cardio plus waitressing... My weight loss stalled.

I recently developed an interest in IIFYM. Mainly because depriving myself of nutrients I need to survive is never a good thing. I truly do not believe ANYONE should have to live on 1200 calories a day.

My current stats are as follows. Im 21 5ft2, 153lbs and looking to lose body fat and gain muscle. Currently standing at 27% body fat according to the handheld machine I use.

Exercise - 20 mins of cardio a day followed by 30-40 mins of weight lifting (relatively heavy) 4 days a week, I also waitress on weekends

With the IIFYM calculator at 25% of a cut, it has me eating 1561 calories 190 carbs 100 P and 44 F
I altered this to 195C 117P and 35 F

My question is, is this accurate, too less, or too much. Any input would REALLY be appreciated! I do not know a lot about this and would really love to get down to 130-125lbs and 15% body fat or lower!
ADD ME ON HERE IF YOU DO IIFYM! :)

For God sake...do less cardio....seriously. I would say do it only once or twice a week....maybe for 10 to 15 minutes at most. That's probably why your weight stalled....because of all that cardio. I try not to do as much cardio anymore because from what I heard, it can affect you in how you lose weight.

Why would the amount of cardiovascular exertion have a negative effect on the process of body fat loss?

Well I'm doing something kinda similar...losing fat and keeping muscle (noticed I said keeping as you can't gain muscle while on a calorie deficit) and I heard not to do as much cardio as possible because if you're trying to keep muscle and lose fat, it can affect it. If I find the article, I'll post it. What she needs to do is go on a calorie deficit to lose the fat and maintain the muscle she might have and then do a recomp.

Why would doing 20 mins of cardio a day be too much? Why would it cause weight loss to stop? What is magic about 10 to 15 minutes that isn't about 20? If If cardio lasting longer then 15 minutes stops weight loss, how do marathon runners keep thin?

To the OP: You say your goal is to lose weight and gain muscle. Which is more important because it's often a losing battle to attempt both. Most people, focusing on fat loss is best. Focusing on fat loss does not mean you don't still lift weights and build strength. You absolutely do. Lifting while dieting will help preserve muscle making it easier once you get to the muscle building phase. 1500 or so calories is a reasonable starting point for your weight. See how it goes after a few weeks and adjust it based on results. I would say 35 fats is too little. I like 45-50 better for your stats. What made you decrease it from what the calculator said?

The last thing I'll say is too make sure you focus on accuracy of tracking. I've been doing IIFYM for years and can attest, it simply doesn't work nearly as well if you don't track everything accurately. Check out this guide and make sure you are doing most of the things suggested, especially weighing everything and accounting for cheat days/meals. http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1296011/calorie-counting-101

Cardio does not make your weight loss stall. You burn calories you're in a calorie deficit you'll lose weight it's that simple. Just because you heard it does not mean it's true. Someone once told me that the moon landings were faked ....

Neither 'article' 1 or 'article' 2 say anything about doing high levels of cardiovascular activity inhibiting the process of body fat loss.

MFP is the same as IIFYM, the only difference is that you're supposed to eat back exercise calories when you exercise, while it's accounted for in IIFYM... but overall, it's the same thing, and your goal should be similar with both... so either do IIFYM with a reasonable deficit, or use MFP's goal and eat back exercise calories.

For what it's worth, whatever you're using to calculate your body fat is probably inaccurate, and 15% body fat is low for women.

Whether something is necessary to lose fat or whether it inhibits fat loss are 2 VERY different things. The only thing necessary to lose fat is a calorie deficit. Cardio is not needed to create a deficit, but it can help. Please stop posting bro science. If you want to post some research supported information about how cardio halts weight loss, please do. Posting opinion articles that say cardio isn't necessary isn't all that helpful. Of course it isn't necessary.

Well if she wants to lose body fat and preserve her muscle as much as possible, she needs to do interval training. Also she should eat as much protein for her age and weight as possible to preserve so that her muscles aren't cannibalized along with her fat. Or she can just do a recomp to build back muscle...her choice.

So interval training is necessary now? The research would disagree with that statement. High intensity interval training will burn fewer calories during the activity but more in the post exercise phase. Lower intensity steady state cardio does the opposite, more burned during the activity and less afterwards. The HIIT can interfere with recovery while the LISS isn't likely to. HIIT and LISS both have pros and cons and neither is strictly better for fat loss then the other. Please stop talking in absolutes, especially if you do have a good grasp of the topic.

Cardio does not make your weight loss stall. You burn calories you're in a calorie deficit you'll lose weight it's that simple. Just because you heard it does not mean it's true. Someone once told me that the moon landings were faked ....

Alright the wrong word was stalled, what I meant was alot of cardio is not too necessary to lose weight.

Neither is any sort of physical activity.

If OP enjoys cardio no reason to advise her to cut it.

Well if she wants to lose body fat and preserve her muscle as much as possible, she needs to do interval training. Also she should eat as much protein for her age and weight as possible to preserve so that her muscles aren't cannibalized along with her fat. Or she can just do a recomp to build back muscle...her choice.
Dude, you need to go. You are posting pure nonsense now. These statements you are making are old fitness myths. They are not backed by research. Please stop confusing beginners and please do not post any more broscienece fitness myths!

People who do "cardio" tend to be leaner populations

I posted exactly what I thought she should do in my initial response to her. I'm not bashing you. I'm asking that you do not spread fitness myths. It confuses people, beginners especially.

Well like I said, I'm willing to admit when I made a mistake. I'm actually pretty curious what these people's answers will be for myself as I'm on a moderate calorie deficit but am open to other people's opinions. Yeah you're right, I saw your explanation.

BlackScorpio, I see that you've posted a couple links to MFL. I like Mike Matthews' work too. But I think you may have gotten a little carried away with some of his ideas while missing others. In general, Matthews is not a fan of IIFYM. He favors HIIT, mostly because it's more efficient use of your time than low intensity cardio. He also advises doing cardio after weight lifting instead of before, and cites studies supporting waiting at least 3 to 5 hours after weight lifting before a cardio workout for maximum hypertrophy.

Matthews also discusses reverse dieting, which may be more applicable to the OP's original question. According to Matthews, our bodies have set points where we try to achieve homeostasis. Our bodies resist changing weight. Our bodies fight gaining weight, although they don't fight it very hard. Our bodies are programmed to fight weight loss more vigorously. It doesn't mean that we can't change our set points, because we can, simply by getting ourselves to a new weight and then maintaining. Our metabolisms will gradually catch up, and then treat the new weight as its new set point.

Reverse dieting is used to fix stalled weight loss efforts. When we eat fewer calories our bodies gradually adapt by slowing the metabolism and by expending less energy throughout the day. If you had cut your calories by 500 per day and had been losing weight then stalled, you would add 100 calories back to your diet for a week, another 100 calories the following week, continuing with 100 calories per week until you were back at your maintenance calories. It may take a few weeks for your body to catch up, but your metabolism and overall activity will gradually return to pre-diet levels. When your weight has stabilized and you can eat at maintenance without gaining weight, you can return to your 500 calorie/day deficit and will again lose weight.

Matthews offers a lot of articles on MFL, but the only thing I could find on reverse dieting is this podcast video: muscleforlife.com/reverse-dieting/

Weight stalling has also been credited to fat cells holding water even though they have been emptied of everything else, after a certain time the water drops hence the usually quick weight loss after breaking through a plateau.

Also 35g of fat sounds really low, fat is required for healthy hormone production and i wouldn't mess with that rather just reduce carbs. Wouldn't go below 45-50g.
