Las Vegas anyone?

My mom wants to take me to Las Vegas! My parents go to Sin City 2-3 times a year to gamble and drink and since I've never been there my mom said she'd take me and pay for everything!

Now, my mom is not a conservative grandmother type by any means (she is the one who got me hooked on Tosh.O!) She's already talking about going to Sports bars at 9am! What else should I do in Vegas? Any shows that you recommend? I'm probably going next September or October.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much!

Fremont is fun, it's inexpensive and there are a lot of bars close together, container park is cool.. It's cheap to drink and eat down there compared to the strip. That's where all the locals hang out so there are a lot of cool people to meet who can recommend other places besides the tourist spots. There's Hogs and Heifers down there and Gold Spike that are really fun. Gold spike has giant jenga, beer pong with basketballs and garbage cans as well as giant board games and darts. The Beatles cirque show is good. Carnival court (a flair bar outside of Harrahs on LV blvd) is really cool. If you go in September, the pools are fun (they'll be closed in October). I just moved from Vegas so if you have any other questions, shoot me a message :) I grew up there and would glad to help.

    ^^^ What Justine said.
I don't go around the strip much, I'm usually out running in the desert, hills, mtns around the area. Lot's of great hiking/running areas. Heat will be extreme, but you can always run up mt charelston peak (40mi from las vegas) it's 11,918ft and its usually 40-50F cooler than the valley. 19-22mi trail. 2 routes. Can give you the info if you want it. Or there's Red Rock Canyon, black mtn, lake mead if you can deal with heat.

I'm not a local, but we go once a year - the Beatles Show was phenomenal - we've seen others, but it really spoiled us. I don't think we'll see another Cirque show, unless we see the Beatles Show again. Our favorite nice place to eat is Battistas Hole in the Wall - huge portions, nice people, comfortable atmosphere. Aria has got a nice little sports-themed restaurant attached to it - pretty expensive, of course.

We're planning to spend time on Fremont this year and we love playing pool, so we're seeking out a gaming kind of bar - don't know if we'll find one. Can't understand a town without pool tables, lol! Locals: where can I safely run on my own in Vegas, if anywhere, other than the *gorgeous* Aria gym?

OP: sounds like your mom is pretty cool. Have a fun time!!

At the Mandalay bay, keep going towards the Luxor and find the stairs. They're on the third floor. If you ask, they'll tell you there are no stairs. That's a lie. Third floor, go past the elevators. All hotels have them, just got to find them.
Also, the fountains right outside the Caesar's Palace are nice to look at. Run back and forth past those.

Thanks! Do you (or others) know about the Las Vegas Runners club? I'm wondering how open they are to having a new face for a run or two ... I live in a tourist town, so my guess is that they'd understandably like to keep it to locals only, but it doesn't hurt to ask. ;)

My wife and I are taking my daughter and her boyfriend in August. We go every year and are planning to retire there in about 5 years. There are a lot of good shows. The best show I have ever seen there is "Raiding the Rock Vault." We saw it last year and plan to see it this year too. It's at the Tropicana. We're also planning on eating at the Wicked Spoon. It's at the Cosmopolitan and by far the best buffet. I also just bought tickets to the Tournament of Kings at Excalibur. It's dinner and a show.

    Have fun.

We just went in December. We went to the "Beatles: Love" show. That was pretty cool. :) Also, if you can, try to make it to downtown Vegas (not the strip... im talking like by the Golden Nugget). The mins are lower and drinks come faster, IMO. I had more fun at the casinos down there!

    Have fun!

We saw Zumanity a couple years ago. Really liked it. We don't stay downtown anymore. We're not gamblers and prefer to go a show every night. The money you can save by staying downtown is negated by the cost of taking a cab back to the strip for the shows.

I live there actually, I avoid the strip like the plague. However ne of these days I would like to ride the High roller. I have been involved with construction on the strip since 2001, Therefore I travel to to AZ, CA, or UT to get away.

First time there, don't worry about much and make sure to hit as many different casinos as you can. Each has amazing sights and sounds. DO NOT get there and blow yer wad the first night, getting wrapped up in the moment. In other words, don't get too drunk and then spend the next days trying to recoup. Seen too many noobs do that.

I really like checking out the architecture and shows personally. Gambling is fun, but only so much money I want to throw away. Helicopter ride over the city is cool.

    Lots of good food too.

I'm a fan of the Cirque Shows, Chriss Angel excluded. Elton and Celine put on great shows if they are performing when you are here. I would keep an eye out on Groupon, Living Social, etc., deals since you are planning far enough ahead.

I also tend to avoid the Strip unless it's some kind of comped event. I do like the Linq. It's easy to get to without dealing with Strip traffic. The High Roller is a one and done type of thing but if you do it, do it at night and there are deals for it so no need to pay full price. Freemont is fun especially when the weather is nice. Way more casual and relaxed.

    4leighbee,

I would try meetup.com. But Red Rock Running Club does group runs. Also this group meets a couple times a week for runs. I know at one time they were meeting at the Container Park or other parts of the Strip. https://instagram.com/mission_im_possible/

Also try this app, Neon to Nature, will give you trails around town and their description.

I live in Vegas. Once you get settled, you forget that you live in Sin City, because you just hang out with your friends and do typical things (maybe with a few Cirque shows thrown in). Most of us stick to our suburban conveniences, the way New Yorkers stick to their neighborhood dry cleaner/deli, so you really don't notice the Strip/tourists.

Yeah, my aunt says that. My uncle is stationed at Nellis AFB in service to his country, and they enjoy more of a quiet environment than a flashy, Vegas-y life.
