Question(s) for those who lift at home...

DH and I are going to do a home gym as he hates public gyms, and we just don't have the time between work, school, and kids to get to a gym anyhow.
We've looked at 6' oly bars, 7' oly bars, traditional racks, a squat cage, rubber plate sets, weight trees, rubber floor mats, and benches of varying styles. I think the bench is where DH and I are not on the same page, because I want something where I can do legs as well and he doesn't really care.
We're also looking at a treadmill or elliptical, and I'm hoping for the latter as I can walk outside.
What's a good set up to start with for the lifting heavy things? Anything I didn't list in what we're looking at that would be beneficial?

Get a power cage or anything where you have catchers so you can train safely.
Most cages are made for 7" Olympic Barbells so one of them plus weight plates.
A bench so you can bench press.
That's about all you really need.
I regret not spending an extra £100 on a power cage as now I have to train alone when I'm home from University with no catchers or spotter.0 -
DH is telling me I would still need him home to spot me even with a cage. O_o Not that I'd be using the weights without him home, because I'm home less than he is. :P0

I agree a bench works great because toucan DM so much without!0

I got a 7' Ivanko bar and plates, you won't need rubber plates or mats unless you plan on dropping the weights. I have a squat rack and a straight bench, deads and squats are enough for me as far as legs go.0

I saw one yesterday at Dick's:

It's a set he found on Amazon that was priced decently, otherwise I think we'd end up having to piecemeal plates at Scheel's.0 -

Did he say why? I've never used a spotter. I can't see why you'd need one with a cage.

Because he's a punk. I think he's just being overly cautious. Sooner or later he's going to get tired of hanging out in the garage with me and he'll be like "that's what the cage is for!".0
