Where to start with lifting??

Help please!! I want to start lifting some weights so I build muscle and loose inches. I’ve been on here for over a year and am only just getting to where I want to be weight wise. I know lifting will make my heavier but will help me loose inches. I go to the gym regularly but tend to stick to cardio. The weight section is like unknown waters to me as I don’t know where to start.

Any advise, help or personal experiences would be appreciated.

    Have you thought about doing 5x5 or New Rules of Lifting For Women? Both seem pretty popular here. I'm doing New Rules and so have been enjoying it.
