My girlfriend and I are trying to go hiking more. And I'm really in need of more recipes for foods to bring along with us.
My last hike I had a turkey sandwich, an apple, and a fruit leather. I'm looking for things that are portable and won't go bad quickly.

  • Trail mix is good and full of protein, if you get the one without the chocolate in them. (:

I always take either Kind bars or Clif bars with me on hikes. Super portable, never go bad, and they're filling.

Jerky (they have all kinds now, even salmon and bacon!), nuts, dried fruits, freeze dried fruits (the crunchy kind), I guess it depends how long you are out for. When I am on a long hike with a friend, I like to pack a lunch in a cooler, leave it at the car, and then come back to it when we are done. I take water with me but that's it usually.

Bars, sandwiches and fruit here too. Something that doesnt sit too heavy in my stomach. I like the luna bars a lot, fairly high in carbs and a little bit of protein, perfect fuel!

I usually take chicken and wholegrain rice out with some peppers spinach peas and a little tabasco mixed in.

I learned on my last long hike (several hours) that I needed more carbs with me. I had brought a quest bar, protein powder to mix into a water refill, peanuts, apple....it wasn't enough. We could have kept going if we had energy. I'm thinking some dried fruit would be easy and light to carry. Some rice might be interesting. ...hiking definitely burns the calories!

What kind of hike are we talking about here? How long? What's the terrain like?

I live in a high desert/mountain region and a hike for me is typically 4-6-8 hours long through rugged terrain...up steep mountain sides, etc. I think I'd drop dead if all I had was a sandwich and such.

I take highly portable and calorie dense things like Cliff Bars and trail mix. I bring along some jerky for extra protein and some dried fruit and lots of water. Mostly food I can eat while I'm going.
