RunKeeper: how to track long hikes or cycle rides?

Any Runkeeper cracks around here: I'm wondering how to use it to track long hikes or cycle tours. If I start up the app and keep the screen of my iphone on the battery will be empty after some 5 hours.

what I'm interested in:
the actual track as it's not possible to upload GPS tracks to the runkeeper website
time and derived speed information

what I don't need:
a step counter
elevation data as RK uses an elevation model that overwrites the information collected by my phone

There seems to be a pocket function. Might that be doing what I'm looking for? Or is there another app that syncs into RK which does what I need?

You can turn the screen off and the app will keep running but using GPS data drains the life of your phone battery. If you must use the phone then you could get an additional battery to keep it charged. Your best bet would be to get a GPS watch. Mine will easily run for 10 hours and you can upload the entire thing to RunKeeper when you're done.

I learned to always close the screen, if you don't it will stay open and drain the battery.

If this is regular use you may want to get a hiking GPS. I have a Garmin that can run for days and the tracks are more accurate. RunKeeper tracks sometimes show me zigzagging all over creation. The reason is that a phone updates the location less frequently than a hiking GPS.

I have the free version of RunKeeper so I can't go back and see historical tracks and data anyhow. I love RunKeeper and would pay a reasonable price but feel the subscription cost is unjustified.

Thanks a lot all. I didn't know I could switch off the sceen. I will certainly try that next time and also take an extra battery along.

I do have a dedicated handheld gps, but I don't seem to be able to upload the track to runkeeper. The gps follows me on hikes and cycle rides anyway. I would just like to have my cardio/hiking activities on the runkeeper website. That's all.
