You created a deficit through cutting these items. A deficit created while still eating these foods would work just as well.
This. Unless you have a medical condition (or a moral objection), there is no need to cut out any type of food. Since April last year I've lost 39.8lbs and cut my body fat by 7% (that's just a good guess cause I use a scale, and those guys are never really accurate), but you don't have to turn vegetarian or vegan or gluten/whatever-free to lose weight.
