Lifting Rookie - Where to start

Hey All,
Looking for some advice from all you lifters out there. I seriously want to take up lifting/strength training. I'm not looking to bulk up but to tone up :) and feel good about myself
So my question is, where do I start?? I have a weight bench at home. How often should I be lifting?? And what weights!!
Help I wanna start but not sure where. I've gotten some great advice already but just looking to see what everyone else thinks

Hi, a lot of people start here (myself included) - http://stronglifts.com/5x5/ - be sure to read though the material. Alternatively, 'Starting Strength' by Mark Rippetoe is another option. As you read through you'll start to form an opinion and decide on a course of action at which point you can ask others for more specific advice/ work out tips to help you progress

Watching this for ideas as well. I have looked into Stronglifts a bit, too.

I'd start with Starting Strength or StrongLifts. I think there's a couple other routines that are suggested frequently as well (StrongCurves and New Rules of Lifting for Women?). I haven't looked into either of them but I'm assuming they are compound-based as well.
3 days a week should be adequate. You can mix in cardio on the off days.
Barbells and dumbbells with progressive overloading. Stay away from the Smith machine.
