One of the goals I set for myself back when I first started losing was to get into good enough shape to be able to rejoin the hiking club I used to belong to. The hikes range from 4-22 miles and can be anywhere from urban neighborhoods to somewhat rugged trails (I live in Wisconsin so we don't have huge mountains but we do have 1000 miles of the Ice Age Trail and a lot of county and state park trails that are not part of the IAT). They plan up to 5 a week and you go on whatever hikes trip your trigger, and you get rewards for accumulated miles.
Tuesday I went on a hike that was just shy of 5 miles and made it just fine. My arthritic foot was aching more the next day but I wasn't in any actual pain. My knee and back did really well. I decided I would rejoin, just not be too active in it to start. It used to cost $15 a year for an individual ($25 for a household) so it is cheap no matter how many hikes you go on. If a hike is someplace that requires an entry fee, you pay that yourself or carpool with others who have already purchased the stickers.
I went to the website and found out that, if I choose to receive an electronic newsletter listing upcoming hikes instead of a paper one, it has gone down to $6 a year for an individual!!!! 10 years later and something is more than 50% cheaper! How about that? Now I have no excuse to not join. (If you choose to get paper newsletters, the price has gone up to $20. Obviously the newsletter is the biggest expense).
Happy hiking!
