Is it an excuse??

Okay, here's my experience with this....
I gained a lot of weight on birth control, but I have also lost weight on birth control...
I had a major thyroid problem that made me gain weight, but I also used it as my excuse and ate way, way, way, too much everyday...
I still have thyroid problems (low thyroid), but I have also recently lost almost 20 pounds..
I was just a little disgusted when I heard this woman at work blame her weight gain on her thyroid. I see her on her breaks (every break) eating a mountain full of food...which by the way consists of dunking her Cheetos in cream cheese (yuck). Not tryna bash on her, but REALLY....I doubt it is her thyroid...

My mom is the same way. "Oh, I can't lose weight because of my thyroid" but like clockwork...everyday, not TEN minutes after I fed her a hearty, healthy meal of chicken, veggies, and a carb, would she pull out the BAG of Cheetos and eat about 2 bowls (probably 4 cups' worth). Thanks, Mom. There goes all my hard work.
I hate excuses. I cannot stand them. My dad's excuse is he's an emotional eater. Well, take care of your emotions then! haha I guess I'm just hard on them 'cause I've seen them "try" to lose weight all my life and in their mid-50s, they're finally getting somewhere...but they've lost this much before and gained it back, so I'm not holding my breath.0 -
Thank you for posting something on this!!!!!! My mother has a thyroid problem that I have been familiar with ever since I was born. She takes medicine for it and therefore counter acts the negative affects. I've seen her lose weight, lots of weight. As I often do in life I often feel that people hide behind their health issues as ways to make excuses for their weight.
This month I have decided to take 30 days, for myself. Eat healthy, be healthy, and not blame a single pound on any stress in my life or medications I have taken in the past. Everyone has something in their life that they can use as an excuse, but I say, be the bigger person (no pun intended) and start treating yourself with honesty!0 -
I think people like to tell themselves its their thyroid or they simply do not have time or whatever other excuse there might be because then its not THEIR fault for not losing weight. My mom is the same. All my life I've only ever heard her complain about her body. It led me to have an unhealthy expectation for myself, but I've learned so much since doing it on my own. She sees me now and tells me her plan to lose weight but she never does it. I've invited her many many times to go with me....to zumba or walking the dog or just to go walking on the treadmill. There is always an excuse. I hate it but I can't force her to do it. She'll have to have her own realization like I did. Then and only then will she be ready to truly lose the weight the healthy way.0

No doubt many people use this as a crutch. In my case, my "regular" tests (TSH/blood tests from the doctor) come back that I am borderline/just above borderline. I have always struggled to lose weight, even when I cut calories and exercise. When I test via basal temperature (thermometer under the armpit first thing in the morning), it indicates I have a clear thyroid problem. Modern medicine doesn't acknowledge my issue, so I have sought natural treatments, but so many people rarely do. While I'm not making excuses for her, there are some people who truly do have issues, but don't fall in the "normal" Western medicine guidelines of having an issue (or getting treatment).0

So many excuses, so little time. Calories in < calories out.
We've all made them, I've made them, but I'm done making excuses. Now it's just time to do it.
Edit: this wasn't meant to sound harsh, just commenting on how we've all seen and heard examples of excuses followed by the proverbial cheesies dipped in cream cheese.0 -
I've used plenty of excuses ... it's not convenient to eat healthy with all the running around I do, I am taking so-and-so medicine and it makes you gain weight, I'm over 40 so it's hard to get it off, etc. But the bottom line is this. Some may be valid, some not, but excuses are like buttholes - everybodys got one and they just let stuff pass through. What it's really about is being ready, willing, able, whatever, to *take charge* of your journey and *take responsibility* for your actions.
We may not all be predestined (or even able) to be thin, but we can all be healthy. :flowerforyou:0 -
There are some ppl out there that do that, we might just want to talk to them one day. You never know what they might really be going through you would be surprised. Try to help her if she doesn't listen or doesn't take the initiative to start doing something about her eating habits then she really doesn't love herself enough to make that step :ohwell:0

My mother uses all kinds of excuses for her weight. Thyroid, fibromyalgia, heart etc. She really got defensive when I asked her doctor in front of her if any of caused her weight issues. Her doctor basically said no and Im not sure shes went back to her since.0

Thinking about excuses....this woman (late 50's, I'm in my late 30's) came up to me after a weightlifting class at the gym last week. She asking about the classes, etc. I told her how they keep me motivated, I meet people, I feel part of something & how that keeps me going & how each class is about going at your own pace and pushing yourself. She had every excuse in the book: asthma, scared, too old, too fat, too self conscious. This went on for 5 minutes or so, and I had to put an end to it this conversation. No matter what I said to her, her mind was made up. I agree with you all- we all make our excuses, but so much is about mindset. She said she would meet me the next night for Zumba class, but *surprise* she didn't show. Sad.0
