what can you do with protein powder?

Hi
I've just bought a new protein powder. Its delicious! I plan to drink 3 servings a day. I was thinking perhaps I could put it in my porridge oats for breakfast (its a really creamy vanilla). Also, could I use it in coffee as a creamer/milk substitute?
I think I read something about it curdling or going lumpy when heated and wondered if anyone had any experience before I start experimenting and potentially wasting any!

There are literally tons of things you can add it to. Make pancakes with it, add a little water to it and turn it into a sludge that you put in oats, make smoothies with it, put it in cakes for deserts, waffles, cookies, all kinds of things to do with protein powder.
I am boring though, I just add some water to it and drink it. I would rather eat my protein, but the powder is cheap and an easy solution for when I am short on my protein macros.0 -
Do not put hot coffee in a shaker bottle! The air expands while shaking, the lid pops open, then your wife gets pissed. Iced coffee only!0

i tried using protein powder in my coffee a few times - gross. i do however use it in my oats, greek yogurt ("proyo"), shakes, pancakes/waffles, etc.0

Do you add it to oats made up like milk? I cook my oats in the microwave with half milk and half water - microwave for 4 minutes and done. Can you cook the made up 'shake' or just add the powder after its done?0 -
Iced coffee only. I use a scoop of powder, water, ice and a tablespoon of instant coffee. I have a ninja, I stick it in the single serve blender cup. It comes out like a coffee coolatta.0

I'm using it in spinach, strawberry, yogurt smoothies this week because my spring allergies are kicking up and I'm not wanting to eat many veggies. It's good with vanilla or chocolate protein powder0

ooo that sounds good, thanks. It makes sense if I'm going to use over 100 calories on a shake I should make it worth it and make a meal (or decent snack) of it0 -
go to the quest nutrition site, they just have tons of great ideas of what to do with a protein powder, regardless of brand. interesting fun stuff!!0

I am a big smoothie fan! Protein powder, Frozen berries, chia, creatine, almonds, kale, spinach, almond milk, Greek yogurt and pb2 are the norm. I make one and its two servings. Great post workout, full of healthy foods and it totally soothes any cravings I have for sweets to boot.0

friend of mine uses his vanila protein instead of cream for his coffee.. just puts a TBSP or so in..

Ok, well I have learned NOT to put protein powder straight into hot coffee. This stuff curdles! I mixed half a scoop with water and added it and that worked
I made my oats with water (would usually use 50/50 water and milk) cooked in microwave for 4 minutes then added half a scoop of powder. Its a little bit sticky/claggy but more water would fix that. It was OK but I don't think it's going to be a breakfast regular. Its VERY sweet which I like in the shake form but not sure about the oats. Will add some fruit next time.
I'll try a smoothie next time and keep you posted!

Whey protein is hydroscopic which is why it's difficult to mix with water (or milk, or other water based fluids). It tends to push water away and clump. That's why some manufacturers use add sugars (any ingredient with "-ose" at the end of it is a sugar) to help it mix more completely. The whey protein that I have is sugar free but I've found that adding a tablespoon of 0% fat, Greek yogurt helps it mix better and provide a smooth, homogeneous mix in my unsweetened almond milk.0

I've made Black Bean brownies (which have protein powder in them) on several occasions. You can get the recipe I use in the book "Power Hungry: The Ultimate Energy Bar Cookbook". The book has other stuff in there besides protein recipes. I don't want to link it to Amazon, since I don't regular post on these forums and don't know about linking rules but you can find it there. They are more fudgie than cakey brownies. I did a google search and found free recipes out there too but I have only tried the one from "Power Hungry". This book divides up chapters based on what you want, so it has a whole protein section, if you want to discover more protein opportunities.
Another book I bought was "Feed Zone Portables: A Cookbook of On-the-Go Food for Athletes", which has other types of recipes in them, like homemade gel shots for carbs on the go, it's you're doing long distance running.
Between the two of them, you should get some ideas.
One more thing about protein powder. Some of the brands don't mix very well. Not sure what you're using, but Optimum Nutrition makes good ones. I get their chocolate and love it. Mixes well for me.0 -
