Taking a break from exercise on vacation

I've seen a lot of posts on the past of how to survive vacation in terms of food choices, working out, etc., but has anyone taken a break entirely when they've gone away?

I'm going to New York City next week and staying at my sister's apartment while she goes on her own trip, as she wants someone to watch the place and take care of her cats. She doesn't have a car (sold it in 2013), and I won't be traveling there by car either since in NYC you don't really need one and traffic can be a nightmare. I expect to get in a good amount of walking between walking to the subway station and back (about 20 minutes each way), getting around her neighborhood and then shopping in the city. While I don't think I walk enough for substantial weight loss, I did enough last year to come home only up one pound.

I do eat out there since NYC is one of the best food destinations around and I like to enjoy it. But I don't have every meal out. There's a grocery store not far from where my sister lives, and I buy my own food for the week and make sure to eat in. I was considering just loading up on some healthier food and making sure I had a bottle of water or two in the refrigerator for between meals, to counteract any good meals I want to enjoy.

Anyone else pull off vacation successfully just enjoying themselves and not worrying too much? I come back the Sunday after Easter, and that Monday, I'll be right back to business. It's just been a long month personally and at work, and I'd like to take a break.

When I'm on vacation, I try not to worry too much about food, but I try to keep within reason as well. I try to do two "normal" meals and will splurge a little more on a third meal or a treat. But I really don't think about it that much.

As for exercise, I tend to exercise more when I'm on vacation since I have more time. I try to do something fun and different every day (swimming, hiking, rock climbing, biking, surfing!!) so its not my normal routine and gives me some great experiences while I'm out. On top of that, I also walk to places as much as possible. If a location is within a few miles, we're walking instead of driving. It balances everything out.

When we went to Hawaii last summer, I stayed active and didn't pay much attention to my food. I came back 2 lbs down.

    I do the same thing.
Most of the time I keep exercising but not because I have to, I like to. I explore while I'm running or cycling. Or enjoy running on the beach, etc. If it wasn't part of my vacation though, I wouldn't stress over it. I don't go out of my way to lift weights (when they are part of my program) It's only a short time, it won't make or break you even if you gain a bit.
Keep in mind that you may gain a few lbs just from eating different but most, if not all, will go away once you get back to normal.

I don't exercise while on vacation. Our vacations are more active than normal life because I'm a sedentary office worker at home. We usually end up walking a lot on vacation.

Enjoy your vacation and don't stress it. Just make sure you get a little bit of activity each day.

One week in an apartment in NYC? I'd be out walking every day, honestly. Although I guess it should be raining most of the week, which is a bummer.
